125th Anniversary of Automobile (2)

Ford model T
In 1914, Henry Ford expanded the large scale production technique of Olds, and brought the Ford model T, a car for the masses. This was a big revolution in the automobile industry.

Apart from the gasoline engine, in Germany in 1882, Rudolf Diesel got a patent for compression ignition engine (called after him, Diesel engine). He built the first Diesel engine five years later. However in cars, Diesel engine started to become popular by 1930s. Today, 50% of new cars in Europe have Diesel engines.

Electric cars have been in existence before the internal combustion engine, actually they held the high speed records, but after the popularity of internal combustion engine, lost charm, until now, but we still lack the infrastructure for electric cars.

On a different note!

Two-year-old, Aden Salaad, looks up toward his mother, unseen, as she bathes him in a tub at a Doctors Without Borders hospital, where Aden is receiving treatment for malnutrition, in Dagahaley Camp, outside Dadaab, Kenya, Monday, July 11.
We are very blessed to have abundance of everything. We probably take it for granted, I was complaining about the heat wave that's going on in the midwest, but no more. I stumbled upon this picture, it just melted my heart.

125th anniversary of automobile

It is 125th anniversary of automobile this year. Though a number of attempts were made to make a motorcar since 1672, Karl Benz made the first automobile with a four-stroke internal combustion engine in 1885; he got the patent in January of 1886. Therefore Karl Benz is considered the inventor of the modern automobile. His company Benz & Cie was selling cars by 1888.

From 1886 to 1893 Karl Benz had sold 25 vehicles. Interestingly, automobile was more popular in France than Germany. Emile Rogers in France produced Benz engines under license and sold more then Benz himself did in Germany.

First ever road trip in a motorcar was made by Karl's wife Bertha Benz, in August 1888 to prove the road-worthiness of the automobile. In 1896 Benz designed and patented the first internal-combustion flat engine. By the last years of 19th century Benz & Cie was the largest automobile company in the world producing 572 units in 1899. The same year it became a joint stock company.

In 1890 close by Daimler and Maybach founded Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG). In 1900 after the death of Daimler, Maybach designed an engine named after DMG board member, Emil Jellineck's daughter Mercedes.

Britain had first production automobiles with Daimler engines, at a company founded by Harry J. Lawson. The company was named Daimler Motor Company, after Lanchester purchased the right to use the name of engine.

In USA, the 1st design for an internal-combustion engine was made in 1877 by George Selden of Rochester New York. His patent application expired since he never built the car. Selden got a patent in 1895 but it was challenged by Henry Ford and some others, and got overturned in 1911.
Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory started first large-scale production of affordable motorcar in 1902. Later Henry Ford expanded this technique in 1914.

Taj Mahal (interior and gardens)

The gardens are inspired by the Persian design. There is a reflecting pool in the middle, multiple fountains, raised pathways and trees. Ali Mardan designed gardens at Taj Mahal. He is the architect of the Shalimar Gardens, located in Lahore (now in Pakistan).
In late 19th century, Taj Mahal got into disrepair; British invaders defaced Taj Mahal in 1857. They looted all the precious stones and lapis lazuli by chiseling it out, and took the real gold finial on the dome. Later British viceroy Lord Curzon ordered a restoration of Taj Mahal that was completed around 1908. All the gardens were converted to English style from the Mughal style.

Today biggest threat to Taj Mahal is from pollution. Indian Government has enforced strict emission standards four thousand mile around the Taj.
